A vibrant Week of Culture across our College campuses

Week of Culture Karate class

Week of Culture brought an exciting programme of activities across all campuses, giving students the opportunity to explore new cultures, build confidence and connect with one another through shared experiences.

The week opened with an energetic circus skills workshop delivered by Shooting Stars Circus. Led by Dave Ford, students explored balancing, juggling and plate spinning, guided by his engaging mix of humour, storytelling and insight. The session encouraged confidence, resilience and creativity, setting a positive tone for the week ahead.

At Fleets Campus, Foundation Learning students celebrated Día de los Muertos with a lively mini festival. With Mexican-inspired food, colourful face painting, mask decorating and piñatas, the event created a warm, inclusive atmosphere that sparked curiosity and cultural awareness.

Running throughout the week, the Cultural Capital Treasure Hunt invited students to explore Barnsley town centre in teams. Following clues to uncover local landmarks and heritage sites, students developed teamwork skills while discovering the rich culture within their community.

The Spring Market transformed Old Mill Lane into a bustling cultural hub. Students enjoyed handmade crafts, global treats and interactive experiences including henna, face painting and a themed photo booth. A standout moment was the falconry display, offering a rare close-up view of birds of prey, alongside a high-energy carnival dance session that brought colour and excitement to the day.

Students also took part in dynamic Soca dance workshops led by Pareesha Butler. These high-energy sessions celebrated Caribbean culture through music and movement, helping students build confidence in a fun and inclusive environment.

Students experienced a more immersive approach to cultural exploration through interactive VR sessions, travelling virtually to landmarks around the world. The immersive room also showcased global wildlife and landscapes, providing an engaging and innovative way to broaden cultural understanding.

The return of the International Food Boxes added another highlight. Delivered across all campuses, the boxes encouraged staff and students to share global cuisines, bringing people together through food and conversation.

Spoken word poet Nathan Parker delivered inspiring sessions, guiding students to create and perform their own poetry. The results were thoughtful and expressive pieces that reflected students’ individuality and creativity.

Students also embraced an action-packed Sports Karate workshop led by Paul Barradell, learning key techniques while developing focus, discipline and confidence in an energetic and supportive setting.

Lucy Evans, Personal Development Advisor at Barnsley College and organiser if the Week of Culture, said: “Week of Culture showcased the diversity, creativity and enthusiasm of the College community. From hands-on workshops and immersive experiences to shared meals and creative expression, each activity encouraged students to try something new and engage with the world around them.

“The week not only broadened cultural awareness but also strengthened connections across campuses, leaving a lasting impact on all who took part.”
