Adults (19+) Course fees

We understand course fees can be a deciding factor when considering whether to return to education. Fees vary between courses as they are related to government funding. To find the cost of a course, visit: www.barnsley.ac.uk/courses and search our course directory to find the course you want to study.

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees if you are:
Aged 16 to 18 and taking a course that leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
Aged 19 to 23 and looking to study on your first full Level 2 or 3 course.
Aged 19 or above, unemployed or on a low wage and want to study an additional, eligible Level 3 course.
In receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)/Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).*
Unemployed, not receiving JSA or ESA, but enrolling on a course which will aid your search for employment. You must be claiming an active benefit to be eligible, e.g. Housing Benefit, Income Support or Council Tax Benefit and actively seeking employment.*"
Employed and earning less than £21,255 (gross) per year.**"

*You must bring evidence of your benefits when you enrol.
**Three recent payslips or one P60 must be provided.
"Excludes Level 4 to Level 6 courses for those aged 19 and over.
^Capped amounts of funding apply and are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Awards are made based on a financial assessment of household income
and individual needs.

Paying for your course

Fees are paid for one year of study at any one time. Annual payments will be made for courses of more than one year in duration. You must pay course fees in full at the time of enrolment or make instalment arrangements. Instalments are available for courses with fees over £150. You can pay by credit/debit card, cash or cheque made payable to ‘Barnsley College’. One third of the fee is payable at the point of enrolment with the balance spread over the following four months (dependent on the length of the course). The instalments are made through direct debit so you need to provide your bank details which include your account number and sort code. Without these details the instalment plan cannot be set up.

Learner Support Fund
The Learner Support Fund is available to students aged 19 or over who meet eligibility criteria to support them towards the cost of studying while at the College, including travel, food, childcare and study programme essentials, such as equipment, books and trips^.

Advanced Learner Loan Bursary
If you have an approved Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your course fees and your household income is less than £42,000 you may be eligible for a nonrepayable bursary to cover the cost of transport, childcare or Additional Learning Support. You will need to complete a Learner Support Fund application to access this fund^.

Higher Education Student Finance
The costs of our part-time Higher Education courses are calculated on a course-bycourse basis. Eligible students studying at Level 4 or above can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England at the same time as applying for other maintenance support.

Lifelong Learning Entitlement
Under the Modular Acceleration Programme, we can offer selected HN Flex units at no cost to students or employers until August 2025. You will not need to repay any tuition fees to study the combined two units as part of this package, although the funding you access will reduce the amount remaining in your future Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) account. This funding can be accessed by any student aged between 19 and 60 who lives in England.
