The Level 3 Plumbing Technical Certificate, awarded by City & Guilds, is ideal for 16–19-year-olds who want to pursue a career as a plumber within the building services industry. It is designed to develop a strong foundation of occupational skills and knowledge, providing a clear pathway into employment or further training. As a Level 3 vocational qualification, it plays a key role in preparing students to become competent and industry ready plumbers.

What does this qualification cover?

You will develop the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively in the plumbing sector. Key areas of study include:

  • Working safely and effectively within the construction and building services environment

  • Principles of environmental and sustainable technologies

  • Cold water system planning and design

  • Hot water system planning and design

  • Domestic central heating system planning and design

Course Structure

The course is highly practical, with most of the learning taking place in specialist plumbing workshops, supported by classroom-based theory.

Training is highly practical and delivered in collaboration with local employers. Industry professionals contribute through guest talks, demonstrations, and, where possible work placements. This employer led input ensures learning is current, relevant, and aligned with real workplace expectations.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.

If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
