Horticulture Students Create a Living Tribute for VE Day Anniversary
Posted: 08/05/2025
Our Horticulture students have created a beautiful memorial garden to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
As part of a nationwide initiative to commemorate eight decades since the end of World War II in Europe, our students designed and planted a garden filled with red, white, and blue flowers.
These colours, representing the Union Flag, symbolise unity, resilience, and remembrance, and serve as a living tribute to those who lived through the war.
The garden has been installed in our urban park at the Old Mill Lane Campus, with the flower beds expertly built by students from our Construction course. This cross-departmental project brought together creativity, skill, and respect for history.
We were honoured to officially unveil the garden in the presence of staff and members of the Royal British Legion’s Churchfield Branch. The ceremony was a moving tribute and a chance for our students to reflect on the significance of VE Day and the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
Cllr Joe Hayward, Armed Forces Champion for Barnsley, spoke at the unveiling of the Memorial Garden and said: “I'm honoured to be part of the unveiling of the Memorial Garden at Barnsley College. The garden is a moving tribute to peace, unity, and those who fought and made sacrifices for us all.”
