Foundation Learning team leads Pearson Awards success for Barnsley College

Barnsley College is celebrating the success of more than ten Pearson Award winners, with staff recognised across departments including Digital and Creative Industries, A Levels and Additional Learning Support.

The College’s standout achievement came from its Foundation Learning team, which received a prestigious Silver Award in the Pearson National Teaching Awards. The team is now in the running for a Gold Award, with the winner set to be announced in November 2026.

Based at the College’s Fleets campus, the Foundation Learning team supports students – many of whom are vulnerable, disadvantaged or have previously had negative experiences of education – to achieve Level 1 qualifications as a gateway into Further Education (FE), employment or other positive destinations.

The team’s impact is reflected in strong outcomes. Since 2020, progression to Level 2 has risen from 32% to 76%, positive destinations now exceed 90%, and achievement in English and maths continues to improve year-on-year.

David Akeroyd, Principal and CEO of Barnsley College, said: “We are incredibly proud to see our Foundation Learning team recognised on a national stage through the Pearson National Teaching Awards.

“Their work goes far beyond the classroom. They have created a strong, supportive community around their learners – working collaboratively inside and outside of College to enrich the student experience and open up new opportunities.

“This recognition reflects the team’s unwavering commitment to inclusive education and their belief that every learner, regardless of their starting point, deserves the opportunity to achieve and progress. The impact they are making on young people’s lives is truly exceptional, and this nomination is richly deserved.”
