Barnsley Griffins set for national university esports competition

Posted: 13/04/26

Students at Barnsley College University Centre (BCUC) are set to take their competitive gaming to the next level after Barnsley Griffins joined National Student Esports, the official body of UK university esports.

Barnsley Griffins is a student-led society built by players, for players. Competing in national leagues, British Esports and Local Area Network (LAN) events, the team has developed a strong reputation for commitment, progression and pride in representing Barnsley.

With an inclusive ethos at its core, welcomes players of all abilities, from those new to competitive esports to experienced players seeking a structured team environment. Whether students want to compete, improve their skills, create content or be part of a supportive community, there is a place for everyone.

The society is driven by students with support from staff, giving members real ownership of their esports experience. Alongside competition, students can develop transferable skills in leadership, team management, coaching, analysis and broadcasting.

Thomas Wilford, Esports Teacher at BCUC said:
“Barnsley College is now registered as a competing institute within
National Student Esports. This is great news as it allows our students to compete in a greater range of esports titles during the next academic year.

Barnsley Griffins have already seen success at further education level and I am excited to see how we fare within the university league. Come on you Griffins (COYG)!”
