Barnsley Griffins take double victory in charity esports tournaments

Posted: 10/06/26

Barnsley College University Centre (BCUC) esports team, the Barnsley Griffins, celebrated a double victory after winning both the Overwatch and Valorant competitions in a charity esports tournament.

The tournament saw student teams from BCUC, Oldham College and Nexus Academy compete, with both finals coming down to Barnsley Griffins versus Oldham College.

The event was organised after Luke Swaby, a former Barnsley College student and staff member who now teaches esport at  Oldham College, invited BCUC to take part.

Alfie Caunt, a Barnsley Griffins player, said: “We’re doing this for a great cause, supporting Cancer Research UK. It’s a good opportunity at the end of the year for everybody to come together, take part in some extracurricular activity, use what we’ve learned throughout the year, put it into practice and, come out victorious.”

The Barnsley Griffins delivered an outstanding performance, winning both competitions without losing a single match across the tournament.

Each player from the winning Overwatch competition received a Puma Play chair, donated by Man City Esport, and the Valorant team received £20 gift vouchers, the events also raised more than £150 for Cancer Research UK through a charity livestream.

Thomas Wilford, Esport Teacher at Barnsley College University Centre, added: “The charity event showcased the very best of student esports, demonstrating teamwork, organisation and community spirit.

“Our students not only competed to a high standard but also contributed through their charity livestream, raising valuable funds for Cancer Research UK. It was a brilliant example of learning beyond the classroom.”
